Cochem beats (nearly) all of them

Viewers of German MDR-TV voted our town the second most beautiful ‘wine-location’ in Germany!

There were 40 candidate locations to choose from. Viewers of TV Channel ‘Central German Broadcasting’ (MDR), the programme “Top Ten” were asked to vote over the internet and Cochem did very well indeed. Cochem on the Moselle is one of the most beautiful wine-growing locations in Germany.
Cochem was second only to Besigheim on the Neckar. That is nothing to be ashamed of says the Director of Cochem Tourism, Mr Harald Bacher: “We are in front of Traben-Trarbach and Bernkastel-Kues”. Moselle wide therefore, Cochem is the leader.
Herr Bacher described the principles of the MDR Channel programme “Top Ten”: before the viewers gave their vote over the internet the prospective 40 participant locations were to be introduced to them on TV. “When we became aware of this, we informed all our hotels, guest houses and restaurants”, said Mr Bacher. He now presumes that many of the voters were ‘our’ guests on the night and voted over the internet. “We really do have many guests here from central Germany”, he said.
That the MDR intended to hold a vote for the most beautiful wine region in Germany was known to Mr Bacher since June of this year: “The ‘Top Ten’ editorial staff approached me and requested information material. I made a number of photographs and brochures available to them”, explained the Director of Tourism. Whether a TV crew really were in Cochem and had filmed, is not known to Mr Bacher: “At least no one has approached me about this, however it is possible that the actual TV film used on the night was recorded much earlier”, he said. In spite of that the film illustrated the typical cosiness of the Moselle, according to his opinion. “Otherwise we would not have done nearly so well”.
The result of the internet vote also convinces Mr Bacher that the Cochem tourist concept is justified and right: „We have marketed the town for many years as the ‘Moselle-Metropolis’, focusing tourists’ attention on our wines. This seems to pay off.”
